I don’t understand why books have shifted from having summaries on the back of the covers to having one-line reviews.
Seriously though. I want to know what the book is about. Not that someone from the Evening Standard thinks it’s a masterpiece.
That’s why I always read the first sentence just like Lemony Snicket “recommended” in the first book of Asoue.
I was talking to an elderly woman at the bus stop and we got onto the topic of books. She started talking about how she has some books she was sorting out. She asked where abouts i live and i said just round the corner and said my house number. She turned to me and said she’ll pop over later with about 40 books for me. 40. Free. Books. Oh my….

Books say: She did this because. Life says: She did this. Books are where things are explained to you; life is where things aren’t. I’m not surprised some people prefer books.
I want to read books that were written in desperation, by people who are disturbed and overtaxed, who balance on the extreme edge of experience. I want to read books by people who are acutely aware that death is coming and that abiding love is our last resort. And I want to write those books.
What’s nice about books is that they never go out of style. Like, I can read something from 50 years ago and still enjoy it and learn something from it. Books are the best.
…So that if I may not write beautiful books, I may at least read beautiful books; and what joy can be greater?
Books are delightful society. If you go into a room and find it full of books - even without taking them from the shelves they seem to speak to you, to bid you welcome.
